In May my wife and I booked and paid for two flights with easyJet from East Midlands airport to Venice in January next year. In August we received an e-mail to say that the company is now evaluating the future of its operation at East Midlands but no decision will be made until December.
The e-mail made it clear that if we booked to travel early next year then there is a possibility that our flight may be affected.
This leaves us in an uncomfortable situation. If easyJet pulls out we will have difficulties finding other flights at such short notice. Should we make an alternative booking with another airline? Brian Taylor, via e-mail
Times Travel Doctor responds: This problem has worried several readers whose holiday plans have been left in limbo. An easyJet spokesman said that on September 3 it launched a 90-day consultation with staff over proposals to close its East Midlands base and no decisions had yet been made.
The staff whose jobs may be at risk will be the first to be informed of any decisions, while affected customers will be told the outcome in early December. But there is good news.
As a “goodwill gesture, which in no way reflects the outcome of the consultation”, those passengers who have booked to travel with easyJet to or from East Midlands in 2010 and do not want to wait for the decision can request a full refund or a free transfer to another easyJet airport.
