5. The Crane Hotel, Netherlands
The Crane Hotel is just that - a hotel in a crane. It still has its original observation windows, but the machine room has been converted into luxury lodgings with a flatscreen TV and a designer bathroom. Best of all, controls in the driver's cabin allow you to swivel the whole thing for a unique view of the Dutch coast.

6. Grand Hotel de Kromme Raake, Netherlands
This former grocery shop was converted into a one-room-hotel in 1989 and is in the tiny village of Eenrum, that boasts three cafes, a candle-maker and a mustard museum. It has held the record for the smallest hotel in the Guinness Book of World Records since its opening.The hotel is around two hour's drive from Amsterdam, and offers various packages including meals at nearby resaurants and a champagne breakfast.

To the casual observer, the Utter Inn looks like just another fishing hut floating on Lake Malaren, but the innocuous exterior hides an underwater hotel with just one bedroom, plus a toilet, kitchen and the terrace. You can spend your time watching the fish swim by, or take your private dinghy to a nearby island for swimming and sunbathing. The DeLuxe rate includes supper,breakfast and a made-up bed - if you pay less you'll need to bring your own sheets.

Kokopelli’s will sleep more than four people but you need to be close friends - and bring your own bedding roll - if you want to cosy up together in this one-room B&B. The cave is carved out of 65-million-year-old sandstone, 70 feet below ground level in New Mexico's dramatic mountain country. The cave is stocked with breakfast food and soft drinks, has a TV and DVD player, Jucuzzi and waterfall-style shower.

Ever wanted to live out your childhood fantasy of living in a treehouse? Cedar Creek is your chance. The hotel is 50-feet up an ancient Western Red Cedar tree in Mount Rainier National Park. Guests wake up to bird song, the water rushing in the creek and their own chunk of private forest. The treehouse can accommodate up to five in its sleeping loft, and has lights, water, gas stove, icebox and sink in the kitchen, and a bathroom. Swimming, trout fishing, star gazing and blissful solitude are on offer nearby and if you want to invite more friends they can pitch a tent below you at gorund level.

10. The Boot Bed ’n’ Breakfast, New Zealand
Another childhood fantasy ticked off - you can be "the old lady who lived in a shoe". The Boot is a two-storey cottage in the shape of a boot, in the country's Tasman region. It's in a grove of hazelnut trees with its own courtyard, which has sun loungers and otudoor fireplace to cosy up to when you're enjoying a meal under the stars. There's also a fireplace inside, and breakfast of your choice, including fruit from a nearby orchard is delivered each morning.
