This weekend is the last chance to catch an exhibition by nature photographer Mattias Klum at National Geographic's flagship Regent Street Store.
It follows the publication of Klum's latest book, Borneo Rainforest.
Throughout his career Klum, who is a regular contributor to the National Geographic Magazine, and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, has led many expeditions to some of the most inaccessible parts of the world, portraying and interpreting their threatened environments, species and cultures.
This exhibition brings together some of his recent and best known documentary and fine art photography, in the gallery space at the huge National Geographic Store, and follows similar exhibitions by the likes of Reza (see the link below left for an online gallery and more about the store).
Mattias Klum is renowned for the artistic quality of his photographs and for his ability to get close to exceptional species, cultures, and environments. In this exhibition, which showcases some of his finest work over the years, Klum shares these remarkable experiences as he photographs meerkats in the Kalahari Desert, Asiatic lions in India, and king cobras in Southeast Asia.
The unique rainforest environment of Borneo holds a special place in Klum's heart - he has dedicated 20 years to exploring the flora and fauna of this once impassable terrain of dense rainforests.
Featuring photographs from the National Geographic cover story, "Malaysia's Secret Realm" and the November 2008 article "Borneo's Moment of Truth", in this exhibition Klum documents the rampant destruction that has already claimed 75 percent of Borneo's lowland rainforest and now threatens its native orangutans and pygmy elephants, as well as the reclusive, forest-dwelling Penan tribe.
Through a combination of deforestation, the loss of biological diversity and an accelerated rate of global warming, the natural history and people of these forests have been pushed to the brink. The loss of Borneo's rainforests could be one of the major ecological disasters in our lifetime. Klum's exposé is a call for all of us to examine the roles we play, often unknowingly, in the demise of one of nature's last Edens.
The exhibition is accompanied by a selection of prints, books and DVDs on sale in the store.
The Regent Street store spans three floors including top of the range photography equipment with technicians on hand to help aspiring photographers get the most out of their cameras, technical clothing to suit even the most extreme environments, a huge range of travel books, DVDs and a dedicated travel desk to help visitors to plan their own trips to some of the world's most fascinating places.
