What has been your favourite holiday?
The only place where I used to spend time on holiday was Honolulu. I used to work in Australia and stop in Honolulu for a break with my late husband, Harry, after doing a tour. We used to lie around in the hotel, have a swim, go to restaurants and sample the food. I liked the sun. It was a sort of romantic break, but my husband always used to travel with me so it did become quite routine. I have a lot of fans in Australia and used to do the clubs out there. Lots of English and ex-Army people emigrated there, so there was always a big audience.
Do you like flying?
Yes, I was always comfortable flying. I would change into a jumpsuit or a leisure suit when I got on the plane and have a glass of champagne. Luckily, I could always sleep on the flight.
What are your memories of wartime travel?
When I sang for the troops, I used to travel a lot. We couldn’t go to the occupied countries in Europe because it was too dangerous, but I had a long trip to Burma. I went out on a flying boat and then, from Cairo, we travelled by plane. It was not glamorous at all: hot and sticky in a jungle, living in a little grass hut with buckets of water. Every night, for three or four months, I would entertain the boys. Some had been out there before the war started, so they hadn’t seen a white girl for years. They were amazed and very friendly.
I made sure they knew I was married, so I didn’t have any proposals of marriage, but they did write me lots of letters. They were always very respectful. I wore khaki trousers and a shirt. I took one dress and could wear it only once because most of the time I was in a little hut. I packed light — when you are in the jungle you don’t need a lot of luggage. As long as you have soap and water, a toothbrush and a lipstick, you can manage.
Where were your childhood holidays?
I always used to go to my aunt’s down in Aldershot, in Weybourne, Farnham, with my parents, my aunt and uncle, and my brother. Just an ordinary childhood holiday. We would do a lot of walking and cooking. I used to really enjoy it.
Where do you travel to now?
I go to France a couple of times a year, to my apartment there, with my daughter. I just like to take it easy and relax. I read detective stories; I have read them ever since I can remember. We hire a car, which my daughter drives, and go to the beach; we have certain places that we like to visit and have meals and do a bit of shopping. I keep everything down there so I don’t have to keep packing and repacking. I don’t tend to travel anywhere else now. When you reach 92, you are not too fond of travelling very far.
Do you go down to the white cliffs of Dover?
I’ve only ever really been to the white cliffs of Dover once, when somebody from the press wanted a photograph. It is quite a way from where I live, so it’s not like nipping down to Brighton. It might seem strange because of the song, but I’m more of a country person than a coast person. I love nature. I spend a lot of time in the garden and potter in the greenhouse.
