British business travellers who use the online travel planning tool TripIt can now subscribe to a Pro version offering mobile flight alerts and frequent flyer mile tracking for the first time.

The company announced this week that is was opening up membership of the annual subscription premium service to travellers outside the US.

The existing TripIt service allows travellers to manage their business trips online. Travellers send confirmation emails from any one of hundreds of different travel sites to an automated queue and the system populates your itinerary for you. TripIt itineraries can then be synchronised with your own system such as Microsoft Outlook.

The new Pro service offers a mobile phone alerting service which sends you a text message if your flight is delayed or cancelled and suggests alternative flights which have seats available.

The Pro version’s Point Tracker is also likely to be popular. It allows users to track their frequent flyer and hotel loyalty balances from one online location, alerting travellers if their miles are about to expire. The service currently supports British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and bmi among other international airlines.

The Inner Circle feature allows you to share trips with a trusted group of friends and colleagues, such as your spouse and personal assistant.

TripIt chief executive Gregg Brockway says that a quarter of the people using TripIt come from outside the US. He told Times Online Business Travel: “Expansion of Pro outside the US has always been part of the plan but it has been a little more complicated to get global SMS coverage.”

He added the company is currently finalising a BlackBerry version of TripIt.

An annual subscription to TripIt Pro normally costs $69 but is available for the lower price of $49 if you subscribe before the end of November at www.tripit.com/pro and enter the promotional code CHARTER. The fee includes the price of unlimited text messages.
