Even though both their closest rivals also won, Currie look increasingly unstoppable. Their unbeaten run at the top of the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership continued at the weekend with their seventh consecutive 40-plus point performance.
Perhaps Glasgow Hawks, their opponents at Malleny Park, had other things on their minds with George Oommen, their flanker, due to go in front of a disciplinary panel after the SRU decided formally to investigate the accusation that he was racially abused by Lynton Brinck, of Boroughmuir, a fortnight earlier. Both players have been charged.
Oommen has the full support of his club but an issue like this does have an unsettling effect on any side. But Peter Wright, the Hawks coach, dismissed any suggestion that it played a role in the nine-try hammering his team took and preferred to build up their opponents as “the best side the Premiership has seen for five or six years”.
The difficulty for any opponent is that Currie have it all — a big, brutal pack, clinical half backs and pacy finishers in the back three, led by Willie Moala, the Tonga sevens international whose four tries in this game took his season’s total to 14, with the halfway point not arriving until next week.
It all makes next Saturday’s clash against Ayr at Millbrae a make-or-break for any realistic hope of a challenge to Currie’s dominance. If the Edinburgh club were to beat the champions on their own patch, and complete a clean sweep of their league opponents, it is hard to see who can beat them.
Ayr found life a lot tougher at West of Scotland, who managed to secure a scoring bonus point in going down 34-26 in a battling performance that saw Frazier Climo, of Ayr, taken off on a stretcher with a neck brace, though later reports were that the injury was not as serious at it looked at the time.
Melrose kept their place in the breakaway group at the head of the table with a comfortable win over Boroughmuir, but the shock result of the weekend was at Inverleith, where Stewart’s Melville at last managed to record their first win of the season in their match against Watsonians.
Edinburgh Academicals and Selkirk were the other weekend winners.
