After all the uncertainty that swirled menacingly around Kingston Park over the summer, Newcastle Falcons could now be said to have a decent breeze at their backs. This was their second consecutive victory in the Guinness Premiership, achieved in devilishly windy conditions, consolidating the gains achieved by their win away to Bath last weekend.
With the upheaval created by 20 new signings over the summer, nobody had been quite sure how the Falcons would fare this season, but they enter the two-week break for the LV Anglo-Welsh Cup sitting in a healthy sixth place in the Premiership.
“This was a massively significant win for us,” Steve Bates, the Falcons’ director of rugby, said. “If we hadn’t capitalised on last week, it would have been a waste of that win [at Bath]. We’re moving in the right direction.”
The picture is less rosy for Worcester Warriors, who failed to negotiate the wind that gusted across the ground yesterday. They had trailed only 8-0 at half-time after playing into the elements, conceding the only try of the game to Rob Vickers in the seventeenth minute, but they failed to make the conditions work to their advantage in the second half.
The kicking game from the visiting team’s half backs was less intelligent than Newcastle’s had been in the first 40 minutes, while frequent handling errors made it difficult for the Warriors to sustain any pressure. Worcester are ninth and will worry more than most if Leeds Carnegie continue the improvements evident in their victory over London Wasps yesterday.
In such difficult conditions, there was never much chance of flowing rugby. One early high kick from Jimmy Gopperth, the Newcastle fly half, was tugged violently by the wind on to the roof of the East Stand. As Rico Gear waited under another hanging kick from Gopperth, he turned round so many times that he ended up dizzily sticking out one arm in vain hope. At one stage, an empty black rubbish bag blew across the field, which might have been viewed as an apt comment on the entertainment.
Newcastle’s front row gained the upper hand early in the game, led by Carl Hayman at tight-head, who was well supported by Jon Golding, the England Saxons loose-head. Mark Sorenson, the lock, made a dart to within yards of the line, and Vickers, the hooker, followed up to score. Gopperth added a penalty goal to extend the lead before half-time and the home fans waited to see how Worcester would exploit the wind. They need not have worried as the Warriors, missing Chris Latham, who was absent with flu, rarely threatened. Their only score came from Willie Walker’s penalty goal in the 63rd minute.
Worcester’s efforts were summed up when Ryan Powell, the scrum half, attempted a quick tap penalty in his own 22 and managed only to knock on. At the resulting scrum, Worcester were penalised and Gopperth completed the scoring with a penalty goal.
“We made far too many individual errors,” Mike Ruddock, the Worcester director of rugby, lamented. “We started the season well, but we’ve gone into a dip now.”
