Michael Phelps to swim in Britain for first time

Michael Phelps will compete in Britain for the first time when he swims in the British Gas 'Duel in the Pool' competition.

A European team made up of competitors from Britain, Germany and Italy will take on a United States squad.

Phelps, the winner of 14 Olympic gold medals, will be a part of the US team for the short-course meet at Manchester Aquatics Centre on December 18 and 19.

Rebecca Adlington, who won two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last year, said: "To be able to watch the cream from Britain, Italy and Germany race the best of the United States, including Michael Phelps in the UK for the first time, is an amazing opportunity."

The full squads will be announced next week.

America challenged Australia to the first 'Duel in the Pool' meet in 2003 and won the first three competitions which were held on a biennial basis. Australia beat Japan this year.
