THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.
Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult - said by locals to be a school friend of McRae - and another child. McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board, friends said.
Strathclyde police said in a statement: "Four people were onboard the helicopter," adding "The bodies were found within the helicopter which is owned by Mr Colin McRae of Jerviswood House, Lanark. It is believed he was onboard the helicopter."
McRae became Britain's first World Rally champion in 1995. He was one of the country's most successful sportsmen, achieving 25 wins in World Rally events and 42 podium places. He was a flamboyant driver, inspiring one the world's best-selling computer rally games.
The helicopter came down within half a mile of McRae's 16th-century home, which has an adjacent helipad. The weather had been overcast, with southwesterly winds gusting to 30 knots and good visibility.
Officers with dogs and torches continued to comb the woodland near the crash into the night.
McRae's wife, a childhood sweetheart and his former co-driver, was taken back to the house under police escort shortly after 6pm.
McRae's friend the rally journalist Jeremy Hart, who flew with him several times, described him as a "very good, very measured pilot".
"Colin regularly flew all over the UK and into Europe," said Hart. "He knew the terrain and conditions at Jerviswood very well.
"As a sportsman he was a true hero. As a driver Colin was misunderstood slightly as being reckless but everything you saw with him came from pure raw talent as opposed to being learnt. He was the Michael Schumacher of rally driving.
"It's so ironic that he should die in a helicopter crash when he had competed and had brushed with death so many times as a rally driver."

Colin, there will never be any one like him ever again. To me, he was a forever true, "Legend Of Ralley Sport". He expressed alot of his thought and raw talent through his driving, that to me makes him unique. I learned alot from him on telvision as a young boy. I would also buy this rally games with his car in it and then try to capture what he would experience as a ralley driver. He will be forever loved and missed. GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY.

Awful tragedy in Jerviswood- following on from Gatebeck, Wansford and HUrstbourne Tarrant Crashes .
There is a common thread in all 4 of these tragedies - not just tragic helicopter crashes in woods or fields but also the close proximity of the crash site to mobile phone mast clusters ( Sitefinder website).
I can understand if crashed in urban areas that proximity to masts would be inevitable but in such rural areas?

Matt Jackson, Aylesbury,

Kürsat-Ehad Mutlu, Vienna, Austria/Vienna
My deepest sympathy goes to Colin's lovely wife Alison and his daughter, plus Jimmy, his father, Margaret, his mother, and all of the people, who were so close to Colin McRae over his life, illustrious and otherwise. Colin was a raw talent that could not be tamed. He was and will always remain a hero to many. It was a genuine case of the pupil becoming better than the teacher and that teacher was Jimmy, his own father, who now carries that tragic loss. As a motoring writer, I can say categorically that Colin was good pal, never a friend, but he never forgot my name and regardless of how he felt he never lost the right words to state his feelings. I shall miss him and feel only a fraction of the pain his family and closest friends will feel today and in coming weeks and months. I can only hope that time will heal the worst effects. I know that the sport will recover from this loss but I also know that Colin's name will live on. It deserves to, in many peoples' hearts. RIP Colin McRae.

ronnie fae dundee, Dundee,
Our deepest sympathy goes to the wife and daughter!
We named our son Collin (who is now 7 and already participated in his first enduro race) - after the big motorsport legends Collin Dugmore and Colin McRae. Our daughter Ellen (10 years) got her name because of the meaning "Light of God" and because of the German car and truck racing lady Ellen Lohr.
We'll think of the family and friends to be comforted by the Holy Spirit.
To all other motorsportsmen and -women: TAKE CARE!
Margit, Birkenfeld, Germany

Clint Clunie, Paraparaumu, New Zealand
Our hearts and minds are with those involoved in this tragedy and with those who were left behind.... Colin McRae brought his sport to the masses. He was as many others have often said a true sporting legend. I personally have woken every time he came to New Zealand before dawn to get the best spots I could on the stages and public appearances just to get a glimpse up-close of one of my sporting-heroes.
He will be greatly missed by the world over. I know us Kiwis all have a soft spot for him and always will.
Rest in peace and god bless

I think that this is absolutely heart wrenching, the last time i felt this bad about losing a great british icon was the day I heard about the sad loss of Princess Diana, while they have both been very different, I think they have given the british nation a reason to be proud in everything they did.
I pray that all the families grieving will be left to do so in peace and in privacy, this is the time for the press to stand well back. My heart is aching for all the families that are in deep mourning for their late loved ones, may they get through their difficult times by remembering their best moments together.

We loved Colin in America, and he will be missed greatly. I pray for his wife and daughter and extended family. As a TV onlooker to the great rally races, I was in awe of his driving prowess and skills to push the envelope, but seemingly always under his own control. I will always have the memories of Colin's unbelievable drives in my minds' eye, along with the late Dale Earnhardt and his last win in October of 2000 in Talladega, Alabama. Men such as these will never be forgotten.

My heart goes out to the McRae's. Growing up as a child, I will always have fond memories of Colin's dad, Jimmy and Russell Brookes going at it. It was so nice to see Colin emerge as the true champion that he was, to fight amongst the best!! Tragically both he and Burns were taken from us at souch a young age. Colin always had the "go big, or stay home..." attitude which made a force to be reckoned with.

Nicknamed 'Colin McCrash' because of his many scuffs in Wolrd Rally - a bitter irony perhaps.
The loss of Colin and Johnny is tragic. My sons and I have followed Colin's career with adoration and amusement.
Our thoughts are with Alison and Hollie tonight. We can not begin to comprehend their loss.
Justin Ramsay, Portsmouth, England
what a tragedy, i feel so sorry for his wife and daughter and of course his friends family who have also lost a child, i often ask myself "why are all the good people who inspire others, who are idolised by children lose their lives so early ?". This reminds of the tradgedy surrounding the death of Steve Irwin with the irony involved as said by McRae's friend the rally journalist Jeremy Hart, life just doesnt make sense sometimes especially when it is someone close to you.I would give up anything i have now to have known my dad who was taken from our family when he was only 41 years old when i was just 6 years old, tradgedys like this puts life into perspective.

I am very sad today!.
But life is life.
Ãlmari Salomies, Kolari, Finland
Colin was such an honest person, smart, terrific sense of humor, so passionate about everything, psychologically strong. I hate the feeling I have at the moment, this emptiness, the void. Same feeling when we lost Senna, Earnhardt, Adam Petty, Greg Moore, almost Zanardi, then Richard Burns passed, and now Colin. No other sport has fans feeling so much pain for their heroes, as much as motorsports.
My condolences go out to the family, I cannot imagine, can't put into words what they must be going through. How cruel.

I'm sad... Another of my moto-idols died.
RIP Colin. You are the best! We will never forget you!
This kind of death is really ironic for the rally driver who crashed so many times...
We had a similar situation in Poland. Our rally champion Janusz Kulig died in a car accident with train at railway crossing. The barriers were opened and when he slowly started crossing the railway the train came out from behind the crossing keeper's building. It was on Firady 13th...
