The manner of his arrival alone might be enough to make him an Arsenal legend, but petty local rivarly aside, Sol is here because he was simply a magnificent defender. He might not have had to do much to win over the fans but helping the side not only cope with the loss of the famous back four and transform into the 'Invincibles' of 2004 was more than enough. The manner of his departure may have been less than ideal, but he is always guaranteed a good reception in the right part of North London.

Much like George Graham thought about picking him for his Arsenal side, Charlie's presence here in a bit of an indulgence. But he made the dark times of the early 1980s almost bearable, he always seemed to score against Spurs and he won the 1987 Littlewoods Cup final and broke that irritating Ian Rush record.

Blond, quick, named after a porno flick and for a few months in the late 1990s, probably the luckiest footballer alive - winning the Double and the World Cup in 1998. His partnership with Patrick Vieira was probably the most complete in Arsenal's history and, though Petit's stay was brief, it will live long in the memory.

Blink and you'd miss him - Overmars's Arsenal career was like his playing style, fast and very effective. To win the Double in your first season is a pretty good start, to score the vital goal in the league (in the 1-0 win at Old Trafford) and the Cup Final is rather special.
