Hull City have confirmed that they would be interested in signing Michael Owen when his contract with Newcastle United expires tomorrow week.
Phil Brown, the Hull managaer, believes that a move down the East Coast from St James Park to the KC Stadium would benefit both parties - giving Owen a chance to rebuild his career in the Barclays Premier League and Hull a source of goals that they badly need.
No approach has yet been made, but one of the first items on Brown's agenda after returning from holiday today will be attempting to persuade Owen's representatives to give him a chance to state his case - which might be easier than he expects, with no other concrete offers believed to be on the table from other Premier League clubs.
"If we can sit around a table with Michael and convince him that we are the right club for him and that it would be a good move for all parties, then of course we would be interested," Brown said. "Maybe if we could get a good year out him and enjoy the goals that would come with that, then it's a move that could benefit everyone.
"He has got a proven track record as a goalscorer and that's an area we are keen to strengthen, but it would have to be on the right terms."
Owen, 29, is likely to set his sights higher in the first place than a club that only stayed up last season because he and his teammates could not find an equalising goal in a 1-0 defeat away to Aston Villa on the final day of the campaign. And his desire to get back into the England reckoning before the World Cup finals is also likely to influence his choice of destinations - if he has a choice, that is.
On the other hand, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson have remained in Fabio Capello's plans despite not playing for a fashionable club. And whether clubs in contention for places in Europe would be willing to take a chance on a player with Owen's poor recent fitness record in any case is arguable.
Hull can offer an enthusiastic home crowd who would take the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward to their hearts, and a chance to play in a team that is certain to add experience in other areas to bolster last season's struggling squad. Owen could be paired with Fraizer Campbell, the Manchester United forward who has agreed to rejoin Hull - for whom he played on loan in their 2007-08 promotion season - unless Sunderland are successful in reported attempts to hijack the deal.
Kevin Nolan, the Newcastle midfield player, who played for Bolton Wanderers when Brown was assistant manager, is also reported to be a target for Hull, as is Quinton Fortune, the former Manchester United and South Africa winger. Fortune is expected to leave AFC Tubize of Belgium following their relegation and has been invited to pre-season training with Ipswich Town, who are managed by Roy Keane, Fortune's former teammmate at United. However, another chance to play at the top level might outweigh the attractions of the Coca-Cola Championship.
