50. Jean-Louis Valois
2001-2002, 40 total appearances, 6 goals
At Kenilworth Road for only a season, the laconic French winger arrived from Lille in 2001 and marked his debut with a 35-yard wonder goal and several assists in a 5-1 demolition of Torquay. His pinpoint crosses and thunderous long-range goals prompted Luton to promotion, despite his pathological dislike of tackling back and defending. Fell out with manager Joe Kinnear and moved on to Hearts. Worth his Top 50 inclusion if only for the probably exaggerated training ground story that a coach, failing completely to communicate with him about a free-kick routine, was reduced to exhorting him to "pomme frite" the ball to the far post.
49. John Faulkner
1972-1978, 239 appearances, 7 goals
Had Luton avoided relegation this season as well as winning the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, then a small part of the credit would have gone to "Max". Manager Mick Harford called on the former centre-half, now a sports psychologist, to give the players a motivational talk. On the pitch, fans' favourite Faulkner joined Luton in 1972-73 and helped them to promotion the following season, playing until 1978 before heading to the US. The dependable Max returned as youth team coach and later as Jim Ryan's first-team coach.
48. Brian Lewis
1968-1969, 59 appearances, 25 goals
For defenders, Lewis was a nightmare. He would back into defenders, crash to the ground and win a penalty; he would provoke defenders into taking a swing at him and getting sent off. Luton fans loved him, of course. His pedigree was definitely First Division but when he fell out of favour at Coventry, Third Division Luton snapped him up in 1968. He top scored with 22 in his first season, but new manager Alec Stock didn’t fancy him and he was restricted to five matches in the next season before a transfer to Oxford United. Sadly he died in 1998 aged 55.
46 = Paul and Ron Futcher
Paul, 1974-1978, 142 appearances, 1 goal; Ron, 1974-1978, 133 appearances, 43 goals
The identical twins were signed as 17-year-olds from Chester in 1974 and were pitched into the team halfway though the ultimately fruitless First Division survival battle. It's a tribute to Paul's classy defending and Ron's goals that if the Hatters had played in the first half of the season as they did in the second, they would have finished in the top 10. Ron marked his full debut with a match-winning goal and followed it up with a hat-trick against Wolves. Paul was twice called into the full England squad and on each occasion his involvement was ended by a car crash before he could win his first cap. Both were signed by Manchester City in 1978 and went on to play for a number of clubs into their late 30s.
