Brian Rose, the Somerset director of cricket, has admitted he feared Marcus Trescothick could suffer a relapse of the stress-related illness that forced him to return home early from the Champions League in India.
The opening batsman flew back from Bangalore yesterday morning to rejoin his family in Taunton having felt unable to continue playing in the tournament for Somerset because of the recurring illness that has blighted his career. Trescothick’s wife, Hayley, who had accompanied him on the trip, had returned home two days earlier.
The tournament was the first time Trescothick had travelled overseas for almost three years. He is unlikely to play cricket overseas again after this development.
Rose refused to release further details of Trescothick's condition but said that his future lay with Somerset, however he admitted he always feared the left-hander may not see out the tournament in India.
"With a past history you always get the feeling that yes, it might happen," Rose said. "As a director of cricket you put your squad together and you make your arrangements. I had the feeling what may happen, may happen.
"I accompanied Marcus and [his wife] Hayley on the plane coming out to India and he was absolutely fine. We came out four days after the team arrived and we had a good time and a very good chat. Long-distance travel gives you the opportunity to get to know each other better and we had no problem at all." Somerset will not replace the player on the tour.
Although Trescothick played in Somerset’s group game against Trinidad & Tobago on Monday, he was said to be “not at 100 per cent” during the match, having reported concerns about his condition to Rose before the match. He made three runs from five balls in a 44-run defeat though Somerset still qualified for the next round.
"He was very honest to me after that, he said, 'Look, I'm only firing at 60 to 70 per cent,'" Rose said. "As a cricket director you have to sit down and discuss what you want to do. You come to the conclusion that the best thing is for him to go home."
