Hundreds of Chinese protesters were arrested today on suspicion of setting fire to police and government buildings in a violent outburst over an apparent cover-up over a teenage girl’s death in the southwest of the country.
Paramilitary police swarmed over Weng’an, a town in hilly Guizhou province, rounding up suspected protesters using YouTube footage of Saturday’s unrest.
Triggering the unrest was the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old high school student. Investigators initially questioned three young men, two of whom had strong “guangxi” – local connections – one reportedly being the son of the deputy mayor and the other related to police officials.
When the three men were released without charge and the police dismissed the death as a suicide, outrage erupted. Her uncle, a popular schoolteacher in the community, was reportedly beaten when he attempted to complain to the authorities.
Witnesses said that one person had been killed in the riots, which saw the deployment of over 1,500 police. Some 10,000 people had taken to the streets in protest, the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said, and around 150 had been injured in the clashes. The Communist Party’s local headquarters were badly damaged.
By midday today, police had detained some 300 protesters accused of taking part in the violence, the human rights organisation said. Some suspects were sent straight to detention centres.
Liu Zhongmin, a teacher at the No. 3 Middle School in Weng’an County, where the girl studied, said the county’s medical expert had recorded a verdict of drowning. Further investigations by more senior medical experts were ongoing but residents feared the conclusion would be the same, he said.
“The girl’s teacher is now explaining the whole situation to her fellow students, trying to keep them calm,” he added.
In the aftermath of the violence, official vehicles patrolled Weng’an’s streets with loudspeakers ordering rioters to turn themselves in. Local television stations also broadcast warnings to surrender, residents said.
The riots in Weng’an – a usually tranquil town set in a valley of terraced rice and vegetable fields about three hours from the provincial capital of Guiyang – are the latest in a series of violent protests that have broken out across the country in recent years as citizens vent anger over official corruption, land confiscation and a growing gap between the rich and poor.
They are a great source of embarrassment to the ruling Communist Party, which has made building what it calls a “harmonious society” a priority and is determined to showcase itself as a model of peace and stability at the Beijing Olympics in August.
The regime has launched a nationwide crackdown on public dissent ahead of the August 8 opening ceremony, ordering local officials to halt petition campaigns by disgruntled citizens and to prevent "mass incidents", such as riots and demonstrations, according to state media.
"The Beijing Olympics are approaching and properly carrying out petition and stability work, protecting social harmony and stability, and ensuring the Beijing Olympics go safely and smoothly has become a tough battle that every department at every level must win," said one report on Saturday’s stability conference.
"Now we are entering a state of war," said the report on a local government website in the eastern province of Zhejiang
While the internet was today buzzing with stories of the girl’s plight and the crackdown on protesters, official media offered only an expurgated version of events.
A report in the Guizhou Daily said that a few “unlawful” elements had incited others to “smash and burn”, while the state-run Xinhua news agency said that people “who did not know the exact context of what had happened” had instigated trouble, immediately quelled by the authorities.
Telephones were not answered today at the Weng’an public security bureau and county government office. A male employee at Qiannan prefecture’s public security bureau, which oversees Weng’an, said the investigation into the student’s death was still under way. He refused to give his name or position.

the people of china are beginning to wake up to the fact that the communist party is a monster, just look at how it is torturing and killing innocent falun gong practitioners.
jeff, montreal,
stefan, milan, italy - I guess that China is not much different from Berlusconi`s Italy! How many govt`has Italy has since the war or have you lost count? Maybe you might call that a good democracy but I call it a basketcase!
Glynn, Kingston,
Many of you merely learn China from the Internet and newspaper, etc. based on the position of yourselves. But how many of you really know the attitude and position of our Chinese people. The high developing speed of China has witnessed the competence of CCP and the suppot of Chinese to CCP.
Trojan, Changsha, China
yes, there is some trouble, but,i hope, sky may be clear!
yinjianchen, wuhan, china
Corruption has become the biggest problem for China. Hong Kong and Singapore can be good reference for CCP. We need development not just in economics, but also in public service and administration. However I have confidence in current regime. we don't need exactly the same system as west.
B.W, Guangzhou, P.R.China
Chinese government is too careful about the attitude from west countries. This is because western media "connect" everything with Olympics. In my opinion, sports is just sports. You can always find politics reasons to attack a developing country, but dont kidnap Olympics!
B.W, Guangzhou, P.R.China
Sigh...., I don't understand that why people can be so upset with this issue and become hostile to China. This kind of incident is also happening in most of the developing country, well at least in the country that I was born. why can't we criticize positively? It will be much helpful in this way.
harry, sydney,
Does everybody know that most of the Chinese people don't think China is still a communist country? Maybe the CCP should change their name with Lib Dem like some western hypocrites? If you dont believe that, ask as many Chinese as you can on the streets in the UK or China.
Ran, York, UK
Where are the Chinese comments about this? I thought, after all the you--just-don't-understand-how-wonderful-China-is blogs during the torch protests, we would get a little local insight. I'm afraid the apologists just aren't up to scratch on this one.

Troubles never come singly.Blood will have blood.True thing will come out in the end.

The PCC must have learned their trade from the US Congress.
Look at the corruption in the home loans for congressmen.
John, Placentia, Republic of California
Its not only China. In Communist countries, the party operate as parasites on the mases. These are given notional freedom but cannot criticise their wise benfactors.
Unfortunately or fortunately most East Asian countries have never known freedom so don't realize the truly awful state they live in.
R Harvey, Hitchin, UK
and we gave this disgusting bunch of criminals and thugs the olympics we may as well give it to mugabe as well
william gibbons, chengdu, china
This is only the latest human right violation committed by China. Like many who understand the current situatioin in China already knew, the country is full of corruption. Poor people can be raped and murdered and justice will not be served. President Bush should bring this up when he visit China.
Bailey, Hampton, USA
Not the peoples' fault that the only way they can get the attn of their govt is to pitch a fit - it's the govt's. The govt's behavior is embarassing-not the peoples' response to it. At least the govt is finally being honest by declaring it is at war w/its own people. Silence isn't the same as peace.
Franklin, Missouri, USA
For those of us who had the privilege to live in China this is ordinary chinese life: corruption and cover ups. Sometimes a leak spreads and the PCC have to repress. No way their going to let the power slip out of their hands. Enjoy the Beijing games!
stefan, milan, italy
Poor Tibetan people having to put up with The chinese communist party, let us hope Chinese protestors and dissidents can bring down the regime...Mugabes Zimbabwe at least get to vote, albeit farcical with Th Chinese communist party no way out....we should never trade with them...buy British !!
