A teenager who became the focus of an internet hate campaign after she was filmed sneering during Susan Boyle’s audition for Britain’s Got Talent has criticised programme makers for selectively editing her reactions.
Jennifer Byrne, 18, was shown grimacing when Boyle told the judges that her ambition was to emulate the success of Elaine Paige, a West End star.
A clip of the audition at Glasgow’s Exhibition and Conference Centre, which has been watched 120m times on YouTube, provoked a torrent of abusive and threatening posts about the teenager, who is nicknamed the 1:24 girl because she appears just under one and a half minutes into the clip.
Speaking publicly for the first time, Byrne says she was unfairly singled out and that many other members of the 3,000-strong audience mocked Boyle before her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream. She claims that the producers edited out footage of her applauding Boyle after her performance.
“All I did was roll my eyes the same as everyone else in the audience, including Simon Cowell,” she said.
“I also stood up and applauded during the song with everyone else but they failed to show that.
“They could have picked anyone who made a face or rolled their eyes but it just happened to be me.
“I have tried to ignore the abusive comments but it keeps being dragged up. People seem to want me to say sorry for something 3,000 people did. I hope this brings it to a close.”
At the time, Boyle said she was appalled at the way in which Byrne had been targeted and urged her fans to end their hate campaign.
One comment posted on YouTube read: “Talk about never judging a book by its cover. Anybody else feel like punching the chick at 1:24 in the face?” Another called for her to be “named and shamed”, while one fan of the Scots singer threatened to set up a “hate club”.
The term “1:24 girl” is now an entry in the online Urban dictionary with the definition: “a girl who was misjudged and doesn’t deserve all the crap she’s getting”.
The makers of a documentary on Boyle’s rise to fame have said they want to interview Byrne for the programme, but is it not clear if she will co-operate.
The hour-long programme is being put together by SyCo TV, a production company owned by Simon Cowell. It will chart the 48-year-old’s transformation from humble West Lothian spinster to international star after her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream on Britain’s Got Talent last April.
In an interview published yesterday, Boyle said she had been so hurt by the public reaction to her looks, especially her “Hairy Angel” nickname, that it convinced her to have a makeover.
“I was fed up with being called that,” she said. “I didn’t know what I looked like on television until I saw myself on Britain’s Got Talent.
“I saw this wee wifey with the mad hairdo and the bushy eyebrows and said, ‘Hmmm, not really telegenic’.
“So I decided to spruce myself up a bit. When I look in the mirror now, I see this sophisticated lady ... would you want to look like the Hairy Angel? I don’t think so.”
Responding to Byrne’s comments, a spokeswoman for Britain’s Got Talent said: “The show reflects the reaction of audiences to the acts and this was just one of many.”
Boyle’s debut album is released on November 23.
