A police worker was accidentally shot by a gun specialist during a lecture on firearms awareness at the Thames Valley force’s headquarters.
The wounded man, who is in his fifties, was reported to be in a serious but stable condition yesterday in the John Radcliffe hospital, Oxford, after surgery for a wound to his abdomen.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission will now examine how a 9mm Glock pistol came to have a live round, why the safety catch was not on, and whether the officer checked the status of the gun before the lesson.
Eleven call operators were attending the session in Kidlington, Oxford, on Wednesday when the gun went off as the officer – a member of the force’s tactical firearms unit – was demonstrating how it worked.
“A shot ran out and one of the class was shot in the stomach from fairly close range,” a police source said. “There was a lot of blood and pandemonium broke out. Someone put in a 999 call from their mobile phone and two ambulances rushed to the police headquarters,” the source said.
One police source said the firearms officer had been suspended from duties during the investigation. He could face a disciplinary hearing in front of the deputy chief constable or possibly charges.
The source said: “The question uppermost in everyone’s mind is why on earth the gun was loaded when it was being used as during a demonstration in a classroom.”

All guns are loaded and to be treated as so!

Where is the knowledge!!!!
Having carried a Glock for many years, fine functioning semi auto pistols they truly are , but they do NOT have a manual safety!!!
The supposed safety is within the triggger, squeeze the trigger, Fire the pistol!
Is political correctness taking over reality!
As a 14 yr old , I was in cadets, took my .303 home on the school bus, was drummed into ALL cadets, DO NOT point a fire arm at any thing you do not wish to shoot !!!
Please, let the world get back to basic reality !

She had got a gun, she refused to relinquish it...plain and simple. If they let it run, trying to talk her down and she shot a member of the public you lot would be the first to knock the police...oh sorry you already are, I take it that means they cant win as far as you're concerned.
Straight forward reality is if she wasn't armed she woulld still be alive, if she had thrown the gun down she would still be alive...she didn't, she's dead of a result of her own actions.
My sympathies to her family but also to the officers involved because taking someones life like that would never be an easy choice.
POD, Midlands,
Yes, it does look like yet another trigger happy British police officer is at work. Was it really necessary to gun down a woman in an empty car park at 1.20 am in the morning?
No it was not. This is the result of year of anti-gun brainwashing in the UK.
Philip A . Luty, Leeds, West Yorks
And so this country is trying to tackle gun crime?? Another great job by the powers that be! How can you expect youngsters to interpret a situation like this one?
Police are using guns to end a problem, and so now children are doing the same. It is vital that we lead by example to end such scurges, highlighting that guns are unacceptable in all civilian situations.
Armed police now have a multitude of different devices such as tazars, shields and rubber bullets, so why was only one bullet used, and furthernore why did the marksman shoot to kill??
I can't imagine that the suspect was a major threat to the public at 1:30 am on a Monday morning in Sevenoaks!!!
Thanks to Tony's wonderful relationship with Mr Bush, we are now fortunate enough to be the 51st state!!

The lack of details fills me with dread already ... How nice would it be to be able to automatically assume that the authorities had done a good job , instead , I'm wondering why a press release needs to be "worked" upon .
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
"why the 'safety catch' was not on?" this is a Glock, Stewart, there is no safety-catch..but rather a safety trigger. The trigger must be pulled intentionally to fire.
windage, Vanceburg, USA Kentucky
Safety catch????
John S. Kelly, Pollocksville, North Carolina
If one has a Glock Pistol and wants to determine that it is unloaded one needs to do the following:
1) Point it in a safe direction
2) remove the magazine
3) insert an empty magazine
4) pull back the slide and lock the action open
5) remove the empty magazine
A range in Concord, CA would concur with this.

Police shoot an innocent man in the head seven times on the underground and it's a 'training issue'. Police shoot another unarmed man in the shoulder in his own home and it is labelled 'a training issue'. What label witl the IPCC put on this latest firearms debacle? 'Unfortunate' 'unlucky' or 'just auspicious?' Whatever, no one is ever held accountable but the taxpayer
ends up paying the tab. Is it any wonder that so many people believe that our police can getaway with murder?
