What do you get when you mix illegal movie downloads, editing software and obsessive fans? You get really funny little clips on YouTube, obviously.
Five-second movies are feature films edited down to their essentials. The Godfather series is Marlon Brando mumbling and getting older. Fargo is a lot of people saying “ya” in funny accents, until someone gets killed. 2001 is monkeys, spaceman, computer, psychedelic bit, baby. The auteur of five-second movies is known only as thatguywithglasses . His YouTube account was banned after the copyright owners complained, but he’s now back with his own site , and many, many fans making their own five-second movies.

Supercuts are obsessive tributes to a favourite film: a 95-second edit of every single “dude” from The Big Lebowski (link contains a lot of swearing), or all the “smegs” in Red Dwarf . The work involved is mind-boggling, but the results are only mildly diverting and largely ignored. The Red Dwarf edit, which would have required watching 24 hours of footage, has been viewed only 1,000 times.
The term 'supercut' was coined by blogger Andy Baio , who collected the videos in the list below.
