Beverley Glock finds farm-fresh food to make with your children. Five-year-olds can make these delicious snack bars with an adult.

These small bright red berries are bursting with goodness and this recipe for cranberry muesli bars is really quick and easy to make if you use ready-made muesli. Children can help to stir everything together and the bars are lovely for a healthy after-school snack or for lunchboxes. Preparation time: 5 min; cooking time 15-20 min. Makes 12-16 bars.

100g butter or margarine
85g Demerara sugar
75g golden syrup
250g muesli
300g fresh cranberries, chopped in a food processor

Preheat the oven to 180C/360F/gas mark 5. Melt the butter in a saucepan along with the golden syrup and Demerara sugar, mix. Add muesli and cranberries and mix well, line a nonstick shallow cake tin with baking parchment, pour in the muesli mixture, spread evenly and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and just catching at the edges. Mark into 12-16 pieces but leave to cool completely as it falls apart when warm. www.splatcooking.net
