RED LION, ST JAMES’S
This magical, tiny pub is a tour de force from the great age of pub-building just before 1900. It’s packed with beautiful mirrors which make it seem bigger than it really is.
Mine's a pint: Hopback Summer Lightning 5 per cent. A tasty, strong, pale bitter with a good fresh hoppy aroma.
BLACK FRIAR, BLACKFRIARS
This Victorian pub was remodelled from 1905 with a witty, decorative scheme celebrating the Dominican friars who lived nearby. The goings-on are, to say the least, a bit fanciful but the end result is unique.
Mine's a pint: Fuller's London Pride 4.1 per cent. A fruity sweet and malty bitter and the most popular beer in the Fuller's stable.
EASTBROOK, DAGENHAM
Perhaps a pilgrimage to the outer reaches of East London, but this is one of the best surviving 1930s estate pubs anywhere in the country. The Walnut Room and the Oak Room, each so named for self-explanatory reasons, are intact survivors from the 1930s when the pub was built.
Mine's a pint: Timothy Taylor's Landlord 4.3 per cent. A classic strong pale ale, Landlord has won more awards nationally than any other beer, including four times as champion at the Brewers' International Exhibition and four times as CAMRA's Champion Beer of the Year.
FORESTER, EALING
One of the best pubs designed by the busy pub architect Nowell Parr. This pub of 1909 has a lovely Edwardian exterior and a multi-roomed interior which shows the shift from extravagant Victorian design to the more restrained Edwardian style. If trekking out here you might care to partake of the excellent Thai cuisine that’s on offer.
