While we wait for the slow climb out of recession, it’s always fun to play at being rich and famous in plush hotels at cut-down prices.
The Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor in the west end is offering two courses for £15 at its restaurant. Starters include warm tian of haggis with a sweet potato and ginger mash, followed by mains of grilled fillet of sea bass on a bed of mussel risotto with saffron and spring onions and roast cajun vegetable kebabs served with fruit coconut couscous and seasonal salad.
Diners can also choose from the West End restaurant’s grill selection, with options including tuna steak, rib-eye steak, sirloin steak and lamb gigot chop. Main meals from the grill menu will cost more. Desserts include lemon shortbread thins filled with cranacan cream and warm brioche bread and butter pudding.

The first Isle of Barra Whisky Galore Festival (well, what else were they going to call it?) is a chance to soak up the spirit of the legendary black and white Ealing comedy, based on the novel of the same name by Sir Compton Mackenzie, in the Hebridean outpost on which it was shot.
With a weekend of events celebrating the story and its place in Hebridean history, the 60th anniversary of the film promises to be a great opportunity for those who want to explore this part of the world with a dram in their hand.
The programme includes a “hunt the whisky” game, tours of the island that take in the locations used in the film and Mackenzie’s resting place, dinner dances, a golf tournament and ceilidhs galore.

The chef Jim Kerr has moved from running the kitchen at celebrity hangout Mar Hall in Bishopton back into Glasgow city centre, taking over at the Dining Room (formerly Manna) in Bath Street.
Part of Alan Tomkins’s OurVenues Group, the Dining Room has taken over the name of the Byres Road restaurant that Kerr ran before moving to Mar Hall. The menu reflects the new head chef’s signature style of Scottish cooking with Asian influences, using fresh, local, seasonal produce.
Despite his success at Mar Hall, Kerr was keen to return to the bright lights of Glasgow city centre, having built his reputation at restaurants such as One Devonshire Gardens, Rogano and Nairns.
