Buzzwords

Web 2.0
The label given to advanced internet applications that encourage collaboration between users and real-time control over content. Common Web 2.0 features include blogs, wikis and RSS (really simple syndication) feeds. Social networking sites are a prime example of Web 2.0 in use.

Ajax
Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (extensible mark-up language). It is an internet technique to increase the speed and responsiveness of websites. Using this system, background data is downloaded from servers so that page changes occur faster.

Netiquette
Also known as “network etiquette”. Conventions on electronic forums guiding what is appropriate behaviour when posting messages online. They act as guidance so are not always enforced, but do read any forum rules before you start posting.

Wiki
A website or online resource that can be added to and edited easily by users.

The Cloud
Cloud applications are software normally stored on a computer but now usable directly from the internet. The Cloud is a collective reference to all this software, although there is no one place to find it on the internet.

Smishing
A type of phishing that targets mobile phone-users. Criminals send a fake text message (SMS) in an attempt to con users into downloading a Trojan horse that will take over their phone.

Virtual agent
A computer program acting as an online customer service representative. It helps users to complete simple tasks or answer frequently asked questions in place of a representative in a call centre.

Digital divide
The divide between those who have access to technology such as computers and the internet, and those who do not.
