Sir, Far from lamenting the eclipse of the acre by the hectare, Alice Thomson (Thunderer, July 22) should be pleased on two counts.
Firstly, as not even The Times can juggle measurements in multiples of 4,840 square yards, it has resorted to multiples of rugby pitches, Trafalgar Squares and the like. As both are roughly a hectare (100 x 100m), popular and official measurements are now gloriously realigned — and the work of sub-editors also becomes infinitely easier.
Secondly, Brussels has “abolished” the acre simply because it had fallen into disuse with our own Land Registry. So, decision-making about what units should be used in the UK is now back where it belongs — in the UK.

Sir, We have had to suffer many changes being a member of the EU but the latest directive 80/181/EEC is, in appropriate farming terms, “the last straw”. I have a good idea of the size of an acre, having being told at school that a nearby public park was 15 acres. But 6.069 hectares doesn’t create the same mental picture.

Sir, As any crossword buff will know, “hectare” is merely an anagram of “the acre”. So, Brussels — pace Eric Morecambe — we are already using all the letters but not, it would appear, in the right order.

NN Ojha is against English measurements being modernised and standardised. Is it possible that he has done this with the English version of his address? Can Kolkata possibly be Calcutta?
Peter Cressall, La Lucila, Argentina
yes but a nearby park that was 6 hectare in area sounds better than 14.82626215351952 Acres surely !
wui, andover,
i am 48, have lived in the UK all my life, have a maths degree and have no idea how big an acre is. Pretty useless measurement then
doug, nottingham, uk
I can't envisage the area represented by an acre any better than I can a hectare. So - what the heck?
Barry, Wallington, UK
"Everyone knows that an acre is 4040 meters square "
Er... an acre is 220 yards (just under 200 metres) x 22 yards (just under 20 metres). So Mr (?) Ojha is out by a factor of 4000.
Perhaps he/she meant 4000 square metres?
dave heasman, London,
4840 divisible by 11,4,5 - wonderful number. And easy to remember. The problem with 'modern' units is that the legislators never actually use them. Hence the need for more human measurements - units of alcohol, servings of food, rugby pitches of size rather than meaningless grammes and hectares.
Peter, Sittingbourne, Kent
Replacing the acre with hectare is an unnecessary and futile exercise. .Everyone knows that an acre is 4040 meters square and can be accurately guestimated just by running your vision across a field. Hectare is vague and less known. Why replace the acre?
NN Ojha, Kolkata, India
