The Jesus and Mary Chain CD: Psychocandy at WHSmith today
Sir, Like many Oxford alumni, I have been sent promotional material by the £1.25 billion campaign for the University of Oxford. This includes the statement that “for learning and progress in the world, and Britain’s place in it, there can be no greater investment than in the University of Oxford”.
I find this hard to reconcile with the university’s far from progressive insistence on experiments which cause physical and mental harm to animals, including non-human primates; especially as the university could do so much more to develop, implement and promote non-animal alternatives. There is growing sensitivity on this issue. It would be good to have a rational debate, concentrating on alternatives; and even better for the university to end up on what many regard as the ethical side.
Perhaps, as an interim measure, the university might like to devise ways in which individuals could give donations, without supporting its current policy and practice on vivisection.

Sir David Madden is so right in his condemnation of vivisection particularly regarding the shameful attitude of Oxford University which seems proud to be stuck in the Stone Age regarding their stance on out-dated vivisection. The new lab. should have been dedicated to the latest techniques.

It is time for the UK Government to follow the example of San Marino. In late 2007 the Republic became the first state in the world to pass laws prohibiting any form of animal experimention.
God Bless San Marino's ethical and far-thinking Government.
Sally Brown, Mrs., Woodbridge, United Kingdom
The person from Bristol is obviously unaware that animal experiments were never validated in the first place, which makes them bad science. 21st century science should be species specific and evidence based - something which animal experiments are not.

To Ross.Bristol Id say dont try to vivisect your computer system, you need its brain power.
Ian, DERBY, UK
One reason the government's ill-conceived computer projects cause so much havoc is that existing systems are dismantled before the new regime has been shown to work. The same is true of vivisection: FIRST develop and prove your alternative solutions and THEN you may press testers to buy them.
