As the director of Liberty, the human rights organisation, Shami Chakrabarti has been one of country’s most visible champions of individual rights and one of its most outspoken critics of the “War on Terror”. A barrister by training, Shami was called to the Bar in 1994 and worked for the Home Office from 1996 until 2001. She joined Liberty as in-house counsel on September 10, 2001 and became director two years later. She is a Governor of the London School of Economics and the British Film Institute and a Master of the Bench of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. She lives with her husband and four-year-old son in London.
