Read the interview Neil Diamond gave to The Times before the festival
In a Glastonbury dominated by white-rimmed sunglasses, coloured afros and tepees, perhaps Neil Diamond’s mid-afternoon croon should have found a more comfortable home.
With his backing trio, full jazz orchestra and plenty of goodwill from the crowd, all the right elements were in place. The Basher may have sold 120 million records over 40 years but yesterday he failed to convince. He was not getting traction, as ballads from his new album, Home Before Dark, skidded like Teflon over the crowd. Only I’m a Believer and Sweet Caroline really stood out since they let the crowd indulge in karaoke escapism.
“Thank you England,” he cried before leaving, but the feeling wasn’t mutual and the applause lasted less than 20 seconds as he walked off.
With his ageing frame hunched over a microphone, the barbed, sinister tones of Leonard Cohen had no difficulty commanding respect from the Pyramid Stage audience.
As the sun faded for the final time over Worthy Farm for this festival, Cohen — poet first, singer second — painted his gritty dystopian prophecies, opening with an invocation of Hiroshima, Stalin and the Berlin Wall. The pessimism of his lyrics entranced rather than dismayed, his performance knitted together by much-missed gravelly Dylanesque tones.
Where Diamond struggled to seem authentic, it came effortlessly to his Canadian counterpart. Denied for so long the chance to hear him in person — this is his first tour since his period in seclusion during which he was ordained as a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk — the audience had come for that special jagged voice.
This is why there was a roar of agreement when he sang “I was born with the gift of a golden voice”. For this they had a limitless appetite.

That was Ronnie Tutt on drums. He was Elvis' drummer from 1969 onwards. He's a legend himself. The percussionist was King Errisson (played for Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Ringo Starr, The Temptations, The Carpenters,...). The black backing vocalists also sang on Thriller.

As someone from a younger generation, I went to watch Neil Diamond expecting to be thoroughly bored. Nothing was further from the truth! I really enjoyed his set . He is a true classy performer-unlike so many of today's artists. I will definitely go to see him in concert when he next comes.
Richard, Sheffield, England
Watched Neil Diamond at Glastonbury via TV. Wished I was there - terrific - Does anyone know who was on the drums, he was brillant?
Martyn Garrett, Luton, UK
Just watched Neil Diamond at Glastonbury and it was a welcome return to form after several years doing the glitter and glamour stuff. You know he did well because he was obviously enjoying it as much as the crowd were. What a difference a new producer has made. (the same as for Johnny Cash's albums)
John Brown, Wellingborough, Northants
Good Grief...this belies belief what you have reported.
I strongly disagree with your comments and I witnessed again an artist on stage that is authentic and true to his craft and did move the crowd to join in with him from the beginning of his set until the last note sang. Unfair critique.

I was at Glastonbury as a long time Neil Diamond fan. I was at the Pyramid Stage, first in "The Pit" and then in the main crowd, wre you?Try to enjoy life a little more, thousands of people enjoyed Neil Diamond, fact!
Ian Graham, Carshalton Beeches, England
What are you talking about! - Neil Diamond was excellent giving everyone a chance to hear old and new songs. Just goes to show what a professional he is - he managed to keep everything going when the mic went off for a while.
Sue Taylor, Taunton, england
Your opinion of Diamond's performance contradicts the footage I've watched. And how strange that tracks from an album which recently reached number one in the UK "skidded like teflon" over the crowd. Were you at the same concert?
Sarah Todd, istanbul, Turkey
Mr. Coates, I would really like to see YOU at 67 yrs old to stand up in front of 70,000 people, and try to entertain them,I think Neil Diamond's set was superb, from old to young he had everybody swaying and clapping- 67yrs old not bad is it!!
robert scarrott, swindon, wilts
To be honest, it is all immaterial.........the first and foremost thing noticeable was the happiness which shone from Neil's face throughout his performance. He so obviously enjoyed being up there performing for the Glastonbury crowd, so I dont think he will be particularly bothered what you say!
Jan Edgar, Workington, UK
Neil Diamond was, and is a fantastic performer. He gave a masterclass at Glastonbury.I have no idea what you were watching but it was not Neil. I have been with him for 38 years and he has just got better. The 10 shows I attended this tour were the best ever. The man is pure class..
Christine Parkman, Brixham, Devon
Er Hello!?!
I can't believe you were watching the same concert and I don't even like Neil Diamond.
Mike S, London,
You weren't watching the same performance, Neil Diamond was magnificent. The audience looked to be having a fantastic time! Certainly one of the best performance I have seen at Glastonbury this year.
Maureen, Leicester, UK
Neil Diamond and his band gave a superb and professional performance and every note in tune, the audience appeared to enjoy every song he sang and they were still applauding when he
sang the last note off stage!
I wish I could say the same about Amy,whose vocal was often off key, love the record!
Roy C.Smith, Golspie, Scotland
I thought Neil Diamond was fantastic! He shone out as a true star and was so cool. I have just started listening to his music, due to his new album, and loved watching him at Glastonbury. I danced through his whole set! Don't know what you are talking about when you say he failed to convince!!!!
Nicole Sowrey-Lewin, London,
I wasn't there and only saw it on TV but what I saw was a terrific performer and an ecstatic audience. I enjoyed every mintue of it and I'm no way a pop fan.
You must have been asleep or somewhere else not to realise this was a great performance.
Shirley, Loughborough, UK
Saw Diamond at the O2 a few days ago - he was amazing. By chance, saw him on BBC2 at Glastonbury yesterday and thought he was still amazing. As me wife pointed out - he gave it 100%, yet still didn't even sweat (not bad when you're nearly 70). Was Sam Coates asleep?
David Wallin, Westgate-on-Sea, England
I also wonder whether I was watching the same performance. He was excellent and the crowd clearly enjoyed his performance. I agree about the Home Before Dark tracks. Clearly his old numbers are much more familiar than the new. But the new stuff does grow on you.
alan jones, wexford, ireland
even though hiroshima took place iraq was attacked and it still goes on, and between and beside it all these horrible daily news. and armament goes on well in unimaginable dimensions, in spite of Cohen &co, singing elegiac and dressed very elegant, staying far from the scenes. sincerely hmm
Helga Marie Mali, Laberweinting, Germany
Dont agree with your Diamond assessment. Not sure we were watching the same artist !!!! he did have a sound glitch but got back superbly. The performance I watched DID show the crowd having a wonderful time - they obviously enjoyed him lots. Your calculation of applause is way off the mark !
