Great, just what we need, another Elvis compilation. At the last count, Amazon had 636 Presley discs for sale. But having seen last year’s ElvIs sell nine million copies worldwide, we are treated to this follow-up. The 30 tracks include a Paul Oakenfold remix of the obscure Presley track Rubberneckin’ and the previously unheard I’m a Roustabout, which BMG is refusing to let critics listen to until the album is officially released. We also get the King’s first and, possibly, finest moment on record: the epoch-making, white-boys-can-sing-the-blues That’s All Right, Mama and the overblown, vomit-inducing An American Trilogy.

Still, any Presley CD that includes Blue Suede Shoes alongside such great mid-1960s tracks as Little Sister, Bossa Nova Baby and Viva Las Vegas can’t be all bad. There’s also the late, romp-along version of the Chuck Berry classic Promised Land, and perhaps the finest Leiber and Stoller ballad that he recorded, Love Me.
