The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

J.K. Rowling has completed her first book since she finished her blockbusting series of Harry Potter novels which have sold 400 million copies world-wide.
Fans hoping to lay their hands on the latest work are, however, doomed to disappointment as only seven copies will ever be printed, and only one of those has been put up for sale.
The book - a collection of five wizarding fairy stories entitled "The Tales of Beedle the Bard” - has been handwritten and illustrated by the author herself. To add to its rarity value, the seven copies have been bound in brown morocco leather and mounted with silver and semi-precious stones.
Ms Rowling said today that one copy will be sold to raise money for a children’s charity, while the others have been given away as gifts.
The volume will be auctioned at Sotheby’s on December 13 with a starting price of £30,000. Proceeds will go to The Children’s Voice, a charity that helps vulnerable children across Europe.
“The Tales of Beedle the Bard" is mentioned in the final Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", in which it plays an important role in the plot. A copy is left as a gift by Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore to Harry’s friend Hermione, and provides clues that help to destroy the evil Lord Voldemort.
Ms Rowling said that writing it had been a kind of therapy. “’The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ is really a distillation of the themes found in the Harry Potter books, and writing it has been the most wonderful way to say goodbye to a world I have loved and lived in for 17 years,” she said.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, the seventh and final installment in Harry’s adventures, was published in July. The globally-renowned books have been translated into 64 languages.
Yesterday Ms Rowling and the makers of the Harry Potter films filed a lawsuit against RDR Books, a small US publisher, that plans to bring out a companion volume based on the Harry Potter Lexicon fan Web site.
Ms Rowling has said that she intends to produce her own encyclopedia of the wizarding world, and that the book would infringe on her intellectual property rights.

Don't worry. After all the hoopla has died down, she'll authorized "limited editions", numbered probably, for 2-3 times the normal book price. Then, in a couple of years, she'll authorize a general publication. The woman is savvy - don't you people get her yet?

This annoys me greatly. I have been a fan of Harry Potter since the first one was released. And yet I cannot buy this book? I don't think thats right.
I think the idea in itself is great: the money will go to charity. However, if J.K. decided to publish the book with the rest of the series, many more would be sold. If she gave the proceeds to charity, millions would be made. Even if she gave only the PROFITS, it would still trump a one book auction.
Yes this book is a collectors dream, and yes it is a noble thing to be done. However, if you look at the bigger picture, a lot more could be done by this book.
Nathan, Canberra, Australia
I have been a Harry Potter fan ever since I read the first book. I also think that auctioning a copy of the book for charity is a good idea. I sure wouldn't have had enough money to buy it. I think it would be a great idea, and REALLY COOL if she decided to publish it. Almost every Harry Potter fan would most likely go and buy it/pre-order it as soon as they heard it would be coming out.
Elizabeth, St. Louis,
The Deathly Hallows is a great book, the whole series has kept me on edge all the way through, the simplistic style appeals to me, however I would have liked a twist at the end,
say meeting an embaresed Dudley on the platform as he puts his magical gifted child on the Hogwarts Express.

I am SOOOO upset. I have been a Harry Potter Fan since the first book. I hvae gotten all the books the day they came out and read them within the next two days of that. I have found out about this new book which I would LOVE to just read let alone own and there is only seven copies. I really think the actioning is a good idea to raise money, but there is no way I would ever be able to get it for that much. I can only hope with my whole heart that at some point J.K rowling will decide to publish it!!!!

Try putting apostrophes and prepositions in the right place before criticising JKR's writing style...
Cathy, Avon,
How silly do you have to be in your market- oriented (western or not) society to write down the things most of you say here? Besides the point that no one owns anyone or anything just because you gave your money for it... shame on you... money doesn't create rights on anything...just exchanges things. Just if it needs spelling out... the books are leather-wrapped and so decorated to withstand the years and years, maybe even hundreds of years of borrowing from hand to hand until everyone reads it. This creates the most wonderful ending for such a genre and makes it stay true to it self, the world of fairies and mystery. It successfully recreates the age when information wasnât flashing through your ears and eyes like thunder everyday, but was passed along through books slowly but steadily. It makes her, her books and the story in them live literally for ever and not just after all the hype settles and she is long gone from this world.

I was a bit disappointed to learn that there are only 7 copies of this new book, but I will remain in the hopes that shortly it will be decided to publish more for the rest of the world. Off topic - who cares if Dumbledore is gay? I don't understand what the big deal is, that doesn't change the character or their personality.
K.R. , Cleves, Oh
Another transparent attempt to manufacture a "Rare Item" for commercial gain.
Anything she subsequently publishes will measured against the sucess of Harry Poter & Co. Maybe it's time to quit while you're (still) popular JK and enjoy your earnings.
Nick, Emsdetten, Germany
Frankly I find the hype surrounding Harry Potter and JK Rowling to be utterly ridiculous. It's a CHILDRENS book and it shows in it's writing style. A lot of nonsense has been written comparing Rowling to Tolkein (whom Rowling stole a large amount of her ideas from) and Dickens, which I find to be offensive to their memories and their work. The fact that so many 'Adults' have become enamoured by this tabloid promoted tripe is a sad indictment of the mental age of our adult population. Read a real book.
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
To Ed Snyder in particular.
One of the reasons it was so important to announce that Dumbledore was gay seems to be to introduce children as young as ten to the fact that you can be a kind, caring, wise role-model to the youth of today and still be a homosexual. Homosexuality is entireley normal and common throughout the natural world (whatever some other books might say), and I just can't concieve how anyone could be offended by this. Just maybe J.K. Rowlings comments will prevent some ten year olds from growing up to be homophobic bigots.

If any of those gift-recievers don't want their copy, could you please donate it to Virginia Tech's special collections library? Please?

She knows how to throw petrol on the fire of a childs imagination - how will she withstand the pressure of all those little faces begging to read the Tales?
Henry GB, Brampton, Cumbria
I see no good reason to decide after all this time that Dumbledore is gay. Had she revealed that in the first book I would never have bought them. What next? Pansy Parkington got knocked up by Draco Malfoy and Prof. Lupin is a Pedophile when the moon isn't full?
I will not support someone who supports something I feel is wrong. JK may have picked up a few more fans but also lost a few. She made quite a bit of money off of all of us. She will never get another cent out of me and I'm taking all my HP books, DVDs and collectibles to the dump.
Thorn, Pleasantville, USA
All I really have to say about this is wow!
Only 1 of these books up for sale!
And I would really love to read this because J.K. Rowling is just an AMAZING author! And I do hope that in a coupe years she realizes that so many people want to read this and no I donât want it to have the fancy cover or anything like that all I want is to be able to read this book!
Chynna, my own little world, NJ
There are millions of Harry Potter fans in the world so why should only the richest get to read and own this book. It isn't fair. I have been obsessed with Harry Potter for 10 years now, I was there from the start and I feel betrayed. Her fans made her what she is today and she has turned her back on us.
I can understand why she wants to raise money for charity, but could she not of auctioned off the limited edition leather bound, jewel incrusted version. But also printed normal paper ones for the fans to buy similar to Quidditch through the ages and Fanstatic Beasts and Where to find them. This would raise even more for charity - which after all she claims is her main reason behind this book.
Daniella, Boston, England
This article has nothing to do with the whole Dumbledore thing, so just let that chip on your shoulder be for a bit huh? At least use the forum to discuss something relavent, like your opinion on the topic??
Daniel, Boulder, CO
Guys, he's gay. Get over it. It has nothing to do with the story, its just an interesting background tidbit for fans who care to know about.
Goddess, you Christians bringing this up every ten minutes is the reason its still in the news. If you stopped talking about it it would go away.
KW, Philadelphia,
Oh I am sure someone will find a way to get the book 'out there' somehow. Regarding the earlier comment about the announcement that Dubledore was a homosexual. Yes, I find that a strange assertion and irrelevant TBH. Unfortunately, as a fan of the Harry Potter series and the world it conjures in my own mind, this little snippet is a fly in the ointment. Throughout all the books I don't think there is any real evidence to suggest that Dumbledore was a homosexual. To suggest that he was seems bizarre and introduces an unwelcome overtone that should not be there, I do not think. Did this all start because of the character's similarity to Gandalf and the fact that the actor who portrayed him is a homosexual. Some sort of associative badging ?
Colin, Singapore, Singapore
Carolyn from Mich., US, first of all this article isn't about Dumbledore being gay, get with the program. Second of all, who cares if Dumbledore is gay? Children will see this as no big deal if their parents don't. This "outing" does nothing to diminish the wonderful story Ms. Rowling told for children or adults alike. I'm sure she did wait to reveal this tidbit about Dumbledore because of small-minded people like yourself who can't see past a persons sexuality. What "heartbreak and sadness" comes from this information is the knowledge of Dumbledore's tragedy and your sexual bigotry! And no I'm not gay, I've been with my husband for 20 glorious years and have 3 beautiful daughters who have enjoyed the story and could also care less about Dumbledore's sexual orientation. And do you really think young boy's will become gay because of this bit of information? Ignorance on many levels!
As for her having only 7 copies, it's her work to do with as she pleases in which one day I hope to read
Robin Castellanos, San Antonio, TX, USA
Why should Beedle the Bard not ever be available online to peruse?. One should not deny the masses, who have idolised the totem of the Potter Mythos on this coruscating phantasmagoric odyssey.
This literary gem should not be restricted to a clique of plutocrats who have no iota of appreciation for the chimerical miracle that is Harry Potter.
Shame on the bastions of media for ever contemplating this flagrant abstraction, to arrantly deny the democratic world the right to scrutinise a fundamentally important tract of the Potter dominion.
Leon, Tunbridge Wells, UK
Should Ms Rowling have the right to limit what can be published ABOUT her books? She has already received adequate compensation for her work, which she released into the public arena. Imagine stopping dialogue on famous works of fiction. Literary critique, literary analysis, commentary, etc. have been the mainstay of academic literature. With the Web, this commentary has reached into the public arena. Discussion, summaries and information about the books have been on the web since the beginning of the series. This web site has been on the web since 2000. These sites provide a summary of information that is already available to every Harry Potter reader. Much of the information is regarding mythology that Ms. Rowling populated the Harry Potter world with, which she herself has 'borrowed' from mythology. Was that intellectual theft? Once a book is in the public realm, can you really not allow public dialogue or a summary of its contents to take place ABOUT the book?
Sheri, Madison, WI, USA
A museum should buy it.
Ross, London, England
I have to admit I agree with the initials from Atlanta. Much of what added to her persona's substance has been permanently tarnished. No, she obviously does not understand ,or consider ,the plight of heterosexual young boys. At all.
There was no reason for her to out a fictional character that was not drawn as a homosexual. This was children's fiction- not for adults. She has caused many a heart to break , a parent consternation, and millions of teachers, religious leaders and instructors to be thrown into a fray with a child's book of fiction.
It was a stupid, self-indulgent, propagandistic, crass 'confession.' Why didn't she admit that, if she is sooooo compelled to do so, after the first book? Just think what marketing plan her publicists have created. There would have been fewer translations, admissions into countries, less
receiptsand licensing of products associated with Harry, and far less tension and sadness among children and children and their parents and mentors.

Seven Copies thats it? What about the other readers that want to enjoy it!
Justin , West PLains , Us
Somehow, someway this book will be read by everyone by someone infringing some copyright law and publishing it for everyone to read, and I'll be one buying one!
Robin, SA, USA
Why was it so important for Rowling to announce Dumbledore was gay? It was not important to the story. Many people were offended. My ten-year-old doesn't need to know whether he's striaght or gay. I don't need(or want) to know Dumbledore's sexual preferences.
Ed Snyder, St. Louis, MO
'Out' Albus Dumbledore? Check.
Produce new book, then tell fans they'll never get to read it? Check.
Sue fans? Check!
Who is handling Rowling's post-'Deathly Hallows' public relations? The ghost of Richard Nixon?
RNB, Atlanta, GA
What will happen from this purchased copy is yet for me to grasp. The possibility of its contents being leaked worldwide from a net-savvy philanthropist is slim to nothing. I can see a rich parent buying this book for a child-- hopefully any child or adult privileged enough to read it could appreciate this delicate coup de grace.
Nathan Bedrick, Woburn, MA
Totally down for you having only 7 copies, but hopefully in the future she'll print out more to sell to the public.
This book sounds believe it or not better than the actual harry potter series.
Trevor Landsaw, Salt Lake City , Utah
she can do what she likes - the 'adult' fans don't own her. Good for her. I hope the receipients treasure their books and don't flog them off to the highest bidder.
S. Rhodes, Sedgefield, England
I'm sure that eventually these stories will make their way to the wide audience.
But until then... this smacks a bit of a ego trip. I guess she is entitled to it if she wants one.
Lori, London expat,
I'm unsure of her 'motivation' for this limited edition, but I'm completely gobsmacked why she would prevent her millions of fans from participating in her work.
